of an undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science is challeng
ing. Many students think about switching majors at some point during their
undergraduate career. Previous research addresses general retention at th
e university level. In addition\, researchers have focused on what helps u
nderrepresented groups to be retained at the university. Many initiatives
relate to intervention during the first and second years of study\, but wh
en do students\, and women in particular\, contemplate switching majors an
d what or who influences them to persist? To begin to answer this complex
issue\, engineering and computer science students were surveyed in the Spr
ing of 2011 at Michigan Tech. Some of the questions investigated through t
he survey were:\n1.How do men and women students compare in relation to qu
estioning their choice of major? Does one group question their choice of m
ajor more? Do women or men question their degree choice at different times
?\n2.What and who influences the two groups to persist within their degree
program? \nIn the presentation\, we will share some of the most significa
nt results from the survey\, and ask for participation from those present
to discuss their own persistence.\nHosted By: American Society for Enginee
